How to Fix Slow Wi-Fi: A Room-by-Room Troubleshooting Guide

When the internet feels slow, most people's first instinct is to call their provider. But if your connection is fast in one room and unusable in another, the problem almost certainly isn't your ISP — it's what happens between your router and your device. This guide walks through a repeatable way to isolate the cause instead of guessing.

Start with a wired baseline

Before you touch anything wireless, you need to know what your connection is actually capable of. Plug a laptop directly into your modem or router with an Ethernet cable and run a speed test. Write the number down. This is your ceiling — no Wi-Fi fix can ever make a room faster than this. If the wired number is already far below your plan, the issue is upstream (your line or provider) and no amount of router tuning will help.

Rule of thumb: if wired speed matches your plan but Wi-Fi doesn't, every fix below is worth trying. If wired speed is also low, contact your ISP first.

Test each room the same way

Now walk the house. In each room, stand still, wait a few seconds for your device to settle on the access point, and run a test. Keep the phone in the same orientation each time — your hand and body actually absorb signal. You're looking for the pattern of where speed falls off, not a single number.

  • Right next to the router — this tells you the router's own ceiling on Wi-Fi.
  • One wall away — a small drop here is normal.
  • The far corner or the room that feels slow — this is your problem zone.
  • Any room with a lot of electronics or metal (kitchen, office).

Read the pattern

Speed drops steadily the farther you walk

This is classic distance-and-obstruction attenuation. Radio signal weakens with every wall, and dense materials — concrete, brick, tile, mirrors, and anything with metal or water in it — soak it up far more than drywall. The fix is placement (covered below) or, for large or multi-floor homes, a mesh system that puts a second node past the worst wall.

One specific room is bad, the rest are fine

That points to interference or a dead spot rather than distance. The 2.4 GHz band shares space with microwaves, cordless phones, baby monitors, and your neighbors' networks. If the slow room is near the kitchen or a wall of electronics, try forcing your device onto the 5 GHz band, which is far less crowded (even if it doesn't travel quite as far).

Speed is bad everywhere, including next to the router

If even the router's own room is slow but your wired baseline was fine, the router itself is the bottleneck. Old routers running Wi-Fi 4 (802.11n) simply can't move modern speeds, and a router that's been on for months without a reboot can slow to a crawl. Restart it, and if it's more than four or five years old, treat replacement as the real fix.

The five fixes that actually move the needle

  1. Reboot the router and modem — unplug for 30 seconds. This clears an overloaded state and is the single most effective thing you can do.
  2. Move the router to a central, elevated, open spot — off the floor, out of the cabinet, away from the TV and metal.
  3. Split or prefer the 5 GHz band for devices that are close to the router; keep 2.4 GHz for far-away and smart-home gear.
  4. Update the router's firmware from its admin page — it often includes real performance and stability fixes.
  5. For homes over roughly 2,000 sq ft or with thick walls, add a mesh node rather than fighting physics with a single router.

Re-test to confirm

After each change, run the test again in your problem room. Change one thing at a time — if you move the router, update firmware, and switch bands all at once, you'll never know which one worked, and you won't be able to undo the change that made things worse. Speed testing is a measurement tool; use it as a before-and-after, not a one-off.

Most "slow internet" turns out to be a signal reaching a particular room poorly, not a slow connection. Isolate the weak link and you can usually fix it for free.
