What Internet Speed Do You Actually Need in 2026?
Internet providers love to sell gigabit. But most households will never use a fraction of it, and paying for speed you can't consume is just a subscription to a bigger number. The right plan is the one that keeps everyone in your home online comfortably at the same time — no more, no less. Here's how to figure out what that is.
Speed is about simultaneous use, not a single task
A single 4K stream needs about 25 Mbps. That sounds like a small plan would do — until you remember that in a real house, someone else is on a video call, a console is downloading a patch, and three phones are syncing photos, all at once. Your plan has to cover the busiest moment, not the average one. The math is roughly additive: add up what everyone might be doing during the evening peak, then leave headroom.

Test before you upgrade
Before you pay for a bigger plan, run a speed test during your busiest evening hour. If you're already getting close to your current plan's number and things still feel slow, the problem is your Wi-Fi or router — and a bigger plan won't fix it.
