Mbps vs MBps: Why Your Downloads Look 8× Slower Than Your Plan

It's one of the most common — and most understandable — confusions in all of networking. Your internet plan promises 100 Mbps. You start a download and your browser says it's coming in at 12 MB/s. Did you get ripped off? No. Both numbers are right. They're just measuring in different units, and the difference between them is exactly a factor of eight.

Bits versus bytes

The entire confusion comes down to the case of a single letter:

  • Mbps = megabits per second (lowercase b). This is how internet speed is always advertised and measured.
  • MB/s or MBps = megabytes per second (uppercase B). This is how your browser, game launcher, and operating system show download progress.

There are 8 bits in 1 byte. So to convert the speed your ISP sells you into the download speed you'll actually see on screen, you divide by 8.

100 Mbps ÷ 8 = 12.5 MB/s. That 12 MB/s download is your 100 Mbps plan working exactly as promised.

Why do ISPs use the confusing unit?

Networking has measured throughput in bits since long before home broadband existed — it's the honest engineering unit for data moving over a wire. The cynical answer is that bigger numbers sell better: "100 Megabits" simply looks more impressive on an ad than "12.5 Megabytes." Both are true; the marketing just picked the larger one.

Why you'll rarely hit the exact number

Even after converting, your real-world download often lands a little below the theoretical maximum. That's normal. A single download server may not be able to send data as fast as your connection can receive it, protocol overhead eats a few percent, and Wi-Fi, background apps, and network congestion all take a slice. This is exactly why a good speed test opens multiple parallel connections — one stream often can't saturate a fast line on its own.

So the next time a download looks eight times slower than your plan, don't panic. Multiply the on-screen MB/s figure by eight and compare that to your plan — you'll usually find you're getting exactly what you pay for.
