Ethernet vs Wi-Fi: When a Cable Really Is Faster
Wi-Fi has gotten remarkably good, and for most of what most people do, it's genuinely fine. But a wired Ethernet connection still beats it on the three things that matter most for demanding tasks: raw speed, latency, and — above all — consistency. Knowing when that difference is worth a cable saves you both money and frustration.
Why wired still wins
Wi-Fi is a radio signal shared through the air. It fights interference from neighbors and appliances, weakens through walls, and splits its capacity among every device connected to the router. Ethernet is a private, insulated lane straight from router to device. Nothing competes for it, nothing interferes with it, and it doesn't care about walls.
- Speed: a wired link delivers your connection's full rate reliably; Wi-Fi in a far room often delivers a fraction of it.
- Latency: Ethernet shaves milliseconds off ping and, crucially, keeps it steady.
- Stability: no random drops, no dead zones, no slowdown when the microwave runs.
- Predictability: the same speed at 8 a.m. and 8 p.m., every day.
When to plug in
A cable is clearly worth it for stationary, demanding devices:
- Gaming consoles and gaming PCs, where latency and jitter decide outcomes.
- A desktop or workstation you use for video calls, large uploads, or big file transfers.
- A smart TV or streaming box that handles 4K — a wired feed simply never buffers.
- Any device that lives in the room farthest from the router, where Wi-Fi is weakest.
When Wi-Fi is genuinely good enough
For phones, tablets, laptops you carry around, and light browsing or streaming, Wi-Fi is the right tool — the convenience is worth far more than the marginal speed you'd gain, and you can't very well tether a phone to the wall. Modern Wi-Fi 6 close to a good router can even rival a wired link for many tasks. The goal isn't to wire everything; it's to wire the few things that actually benefit.
No room to run a cable?
If the device you want to wire is nowhere near the router, you have options short of drilling through walls. A powerline adapter sends the connection over your home's electrical wiring; MoCA adapters use existing coax outlets. Neither quite matches a true Ethernet run, but both comfortably beat weak Wi-Fi in a distant room. Test before and after — the improvement is usually obvious in the numbers.
